Private Security

A person may have claims against private security personnel, including employees of bars, restaurants, department stores, and private security companies. We have brought claims for false arrest, malicious prosecution, and excessive force. The following are examples of these cases:

False arrest for shoplifting

We represented an Ethiopian immigrant who was criminally charged by store security with shoplifting a coat. He was charged despite the fact that he had a receipt showing he had purchased the coat at a different store. He was found not guilty at a criminal trial. The civil case settled.

Excessive force and false arrest

We represented a gay man who was arrested in a department store because he was trying on makeup in the women's section. The security officer pushed him face first into a swinging door, causing a cut on his face. The booking photo showed he was injured. The case settled.
